Personality
Personality [2+ PARAGRAPHS]
Shadin is not one easily talked to. Most assume from his appearances that he is nothing more than dumb brute, and his demeanor does little to deny this assumption. He walks through life with a scowl on his heavy brow, communicating mostly through a series of silent stares and quiet grunts. When he does speak it is usually short questions that rarely reveal the level of thought behind his grey eyes. He wears the mantle of authority well, though he struggles against it, preferring to stay in the background of a scene.
Shadin is naturally mistrustful of people and slow to warm to individuals. He is careful about whom he associates with because he fears being manipulated. He is fiercely loyal to those whom he cares about and almost seeks out opportunity to shield others. While he has many admirable traits he is emotionally unstable and generally considered to be unlikable. He also has an excellent memory and is prone to holding a grudge against any who have crossed him. In his personal decisions he is often rash and stubborn. He is the type to attempt to go through the wall, rather than over, under, or around it.
Likes [3+]: Dogs, winter, quiet.
Dislikes [3+]: heat, crowds, speaking to groups.
Strengths [3 only]: Physically powerful, surprisingly intelligent, and being fiercely loyal.
Weaknesses [3+]: Impulsive, quick to anger, though he drinks rarely, on the occasions that he does, he drinks far too much, and doesn't always think his decisions through.
Values: Shadin values friendship and loyalty above all else. Those without loyalty are without honor.
Quirks: Shadin has spent most of his short life attempting to blend in with muggle society. If he had his way he would have been born normal.
Appearance

Hair: Brown
Eyes: Grey
General Appearance [2+ PARAGRAPHS]
Shadin is tall compared to most, though far from giant. He is heavy built with thick muscular chest and shoulders that come from a hard physical life. He prefers to wear simple clothing rather than the more ornate garb that most wizards wear. If anything he looks like nothing more than a regular person, aside from his unnatural cleanness, completely indistinguishable from the crowd. He has brown hair of medium length that he keeps shaggy enough to give him what he believes to be a rougish appearance. Shadin is not prone to vanity, though he does like to wear a cloak with a fur ruff and silver chain. He wears black almost exclusively.
His eyes are grey, though most never see them between his hair and the perpetual scowl that darkens his face. He is clean shaven generally, though not fanatical about it. Though he has magic, he is never seen without a sword at his side and a knife in his cloak. Shadin is also constantly wearing a heavy silver ring on his right hand bearing the double K of his family. He frequently wears armor as he is not well suited to shield charms.
Unique Marks, Scars and Features:
Shadin has regular assortment of scars that result from a non magical life. In addition he has a substantial burn on hi his right side resulting from a childhood accident.

Opinion On Family: Family is as far from Shadin's mind as can be. He has never been close to a member of his family and as such as adopted an ideal of being an island unto himself.
Everything Else
History [3+ PARAGRAPHS]
Shadin's story does not begin at his birth, but with his parents. His father, Kartok Alexi Kha,l was the last in the line of an old and prosperous family in Ukraine. The Khals ruled for generations as Kings from their hold near Kiev. The were rich, powerful, and respected. Kartok was everything that a Khal was supposed to be. He was powerful and terrifying, a dark man that inhereted his family's explosive temper and instability. He enjoyed traveling and spent most of his adult life abroad. In the 47th year of his life he traveled to England, where he met the daughter of a thatcher named Elayne.
Elayne was a simple peasant girl with no knowledge of the world outside her village. She had known her entire life that wizards existed, that there were those who could do magic, but she had never actually met one. Why would she? she lived in a small village where there was no one important enough to warrant a magical presence in their life. When she saw Kartok however she knew he was different.
She had heard terrible things about wizards, that they would hurt people, that they were evil. Everyone told her to stay away from people with magic. But when Kartok came to town, nobody cared that he was magic, only that he had a seemingly endless supply of gold. Every member of the town seemed only focused on getting the contents of his purse. Elayne hardly cared about that. Khal, the clear leader of his band, was clean, good looking, different. She was obsessed with the wizard who had happened upon her village.
Kartok was not a man of great vice, however he never claimed to be of great scruples. The girl who stood before him was young, attractive, and willing. Kartok treated her nicely she did well by him. He bought her baubles, shiny things to make her smile, new clothes, enabling her to dress and act above her station.
The news that Elayne was pregnant took Kartok by surprise. On the one hand, he had no children, he had never married. At the same time Kartok had never considered Elayne as anything more than a tryst, something to keep him occupied while he paused in a small village in a foreign country. He didn't even speak the same language as her, she barely understood a word he said.
To his credit, Kartok did make an effort. He stayed with her through her pregnancy, took care of her, provided for her. When the baby, a boy, was finally born Kartok realized that he was never meant to be a father, that he neither wanted the mother or the child. Besides, the boy had too much of his mother in him. He was small, pale and sickly looking to Kartok's eyes. He stayed only long enough to name they boy, giving him the name of the first of his line, Shadin.
Kartok left without a word to Elayne. She waited for days for him to return to her and his child, but he never came. As quickly as things had chanced for her when the wizard suddenly appeared, they changed again with his departure. The word magic became a curse upon her lips. She resented everything that reminded her of Kartok. The other villagers had treated her as royalty while the wizard and his gold were with her, but now she was worse than trash. Her baby was regarded as a monster and they wanted nothing to do with her or her baby. They even wouldn't accept what little gold Kartok had left them with, making her meager purse worthless. Elayne was forced to take her son from the village, leaving her childhood home and family behind.
Elayne prayed that her child would not have any magic, would be normal. She pleaded with her god to let him be without the taint of his bastard father and that she would be able to stop running and raise her child in peace, but it became clear all too quickly that that would not be the case. Shadin showed signs of his magical heritage before he could walk. The signs were small at first, things being where the shouldn't be, items around the baby going missing. Elayne did her best to ignore the signs, they were small and with each time she could lie to herself that nothing had happened but the signs grew with Shadin and soon they could not be ignored.
Elayne knew almost nothing of magic nor what was normal when raising a magical individual. If she had she would have realized that something was different about the boy. Shadin's accidents started happening at an exceptionally young age, and even when he had progressed to an age where he should have been able to prevent them, he continued to have outbursts with alarming frequency. Ironically the child that Kartok had considered to be weak and too much like his mother had inherited his magic more powerfully than the old wizard could have ever dreamed.
Whatever love Elayne bore for her son died when it became apparent that he was a wizard, but his constant outbursts and accidents caused her to truly resent him. By the time Shadin was five they could hardly stay in any town for more than a week before the villagers would realize there was a wizard in their midst. He was a liability and Elayne wanted to be rid of him. She sought out other wizards hoping to apprentice him to one of them, ridding her of her burden, but none would take him. Many were cretins who had lied their way into positions of prestige, but a few were true wizards. In them she found petty old men, jealous of their own power and position. They claimed he was not fit, that he was too weak to hide their fear of an apprentice who as a child would be almost as powerful as themselves.
Shadin grew each day and so did his magic. Slowly he gained some control over himself, but was still dangerous at his best, and terrifying at his worst. His grasp on his gift was tenuous and could be broken easily. His life was a series of fits of temper and narrow escapes, one when he was eleven leaving him scarred.
Shadin was caught in a hellish existence. Each day they traveled walking in search of work. Elayne scratched out a living doing menial tasks for any who would take her earning just enough money to keep them from starving.
The relationship between this pair of mother and son was as abnormal as everything else in their collective lives. As Shadin grew into his middle teenage years it was clear that Elayne was growing ill and getting weaker. She no longer had the strength to seek out work and was left to beg on the street while Shadin did what work he could find. While neither hid their contempt for the other, they remained together until Elayne's death in Shadin's seventeenth year.
In a twist of fate the apprenticeship that Elayne had sought as a means of ridding herself of her son came shortly after her death. Unlike Elayne, Shadin never had any trouble spotting another wizard, and when he saw Godric Gryffindor he knew this man was no muggle. Shadin approached the gregarious man with the shaggy mane of red hair without hesitation. Shadin knew he needed a teacher and somehow he knew this was the man for it.
Shadin was almost rude practically demanding a teacher, but Gryffindor didn't take offense. He seemed to like Shadin's frankness and upon listening to the boy's history, found his potential too tempting to turn him away. Shadin was old to begin his training, but it was better he begin it late than never receive it at all.

Shadin was sitting with his feet up on his desk as he read today's paper. Since he had started teaching he had little time to read, and had chosen to spend the noon hour in his classroom reading the paper. He had just started an article about the success of the Shacklebolt administration when he heard pounding footfalls coming down the hall way.
He glanced down at his watch, his next class didn't start for another ninety minutes, so he doubted it was a student, leaving only one option, a teacher.
"Oh joy." He said quietly as he ruffled his paper turning to the next page.
The door was slammed open so hard Shadin had no doubt that he would have to look into having the hinges repaired.
"How, sir?!" She screamed slamming her fist on his desk. It was not the voice he had expected, but Shadin didn't let it show on his face. It would appear that Helena had not yet found the niffler that He had let loose in her office. Oh well, that was a conversation for another time.
"How in the hell did you waltz in here and steal this job right out from under my goddamn nose?!What spell did you use on her?! How did you trick McGonogall into giving you the job that rightfully belongs to me?!"
She stood there panting leaning over his desk. Shadin slowly and carefully folded his paper and placed it on the desk. He methodically took his feet off of his desk and straightened.
There were few things that he hated as much as being yelled at, and her coming into his classroom, his domain, and attacking him had set his blood afire.
"Miss I do not believe we have been acquainted yet. I am Shadin Khal, it is very nice to meet you. Now, if, as I suspect, any accusations you have made about my character were simply the result of a poor conceived figure of speech, then I will make an effort to forgive you." Shadin spoke both quickly and quietly as anger roiled within, "However if you truly suspect me of any wrong doing, then may I suggest that we settle this manner in a more traditional way."
Shadin didn't have to say what he meant by traditional, a duel. Duels were a rarity in modern times, and he had no doubt that would would quickly step back from her both bold and insulting accusations. Once duels had taken place on an almost daily basis, but through a general watering down of wizard ambition, and the proliferation of muggles, they now were an outdated custom that had little to do with magical life.
"I have no idea why I was chosen over your amply scary self. Perhaps the subject just seemed better coming from a man, or maybe it is because I have spent the past eight years out in the world studying the craft, having proven myself not only a very capable but also powerful wizard. You would have to ask the headmistress."
Shadin continued to stare at her impassively, trying to decide if she was going to slap him or not. Her wand was already in her hand, and what she probably didn't realize is that so was his, under the desk and pointed straight for her abdomen.
